How it's calculated

The tip is the bill times the tip percentage. The total is the bill plus the tip, and each person pays the total divided by the number of people. Round up a few cents if you like round numbers.

Each = (Bill + Bill × Tip%) ÷ People
Should I tip on the pre-tax amount?

Either is fine. Most people tip on the total they see; tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is a little lower.

What is a normal tip in the US?

15–20% at a sit-down restaurant, 10% for counter service and delivery, a dollar or two per drink at a bar.
