How it's calculated

Sales tax is the price times the tax rate. Adding tax multiplies the price by one plus the rate; backing tax out of a tax-included price divides by the same number, which is not the same as subtracting the rate. Enter your combined state and local rate.

Total = Price × (1 + Rate ÷ 100) Pre-tax = Total ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)
What sales tax rate should I enter?

Your combined rate: state plus any county, city and district taxes. Receipts show it, and most state revenue sites have a lookup by address. Rates run from 0% in a few states to over 10% in some cities.

How do I find the pre-tax price from a receipt total?

Switch "The price is" to "Tax included" and enter the total. The tool divides by (1 + rate) rather than knocking the rate off, which would understate the price.

Does the tool handle tax-exempt items?

No. Groceries, prescriptions and clothing are exempt or taxed at a lower rate in many states, so apply the tool to the taxable part of your purchase only.
