How it's calculated

The healthy range is the weight that puts your BMI between 18.5 and 24.9: BMI times height squared, with height in metres, or times height in inches squared divided by 703. The single “ideal” figure is the Devine formula from 1974, 50 kg for men and 45.5 kg for women plus 2.3 kg for every inch over five feet, which doctors still use to dose some medicines. It knows nothing about your frame or muscle, so treat the range as the answer and the single number as a reference point.

Range = 18.5 to 24.9 × height² (m) Devine = 50 kg (men) or 45.5 kg (women) + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft
Why is the range so wide?

Because healthy bodies vary. A 40 lb spread at 5 ft 9 covers slight and stocky frames, more and less muscle. Where you sit in it matters less than trends: steady weight, waist under half your height, and fitness count for more than a single number.

Is the Devine number realistic?

It was built for drug dosing, not dieting, and it runs light for muscular people and tall people. Many athletes sit above it and above the BMI range while being perfectly healthy. Use it as a landmark, not a goal.

Does this work for children or older adults?

No for children: they use age-and-sex growth charts, not adult BMI. For adults over 65 the evidence suggests the healthiest BMI range shifts up slightly, to roughly 23 to 28, since a little extra weight protects against illness and falls.
