How it's calculated
CPM is the price of a thousand impressions, so revenue is impressions divided by 1,000 times the CPM: half a million impressions at a $4.50 CPM is $2,250. Run it backwards and you get the effective CPM, revenue divided by impressions times 1,000, which is how publishers compare networks and how advertisers compare campaigns whatever they were billed on. Use page views instead of ad impressions and the same maths gives page RPM.
What is a typical CPM?
For display ads it ranges from under $1 to over $20 depending on the audience, country, season and ad format. US finance, insurance and software content earns the most; entertainment and global traffic the least. Video and podcast CPMs run $15–30. Q4 is the peak; January the trough.
What is the difference between CPM, eCPM and RPM?
CPM is what an advertiser agrees to pay per 1,000 ad impressions. eCPM is the effective figure after the fact: total revenue per 1,000 impressions whatever the deal was. RPM is the publisher's view: revenue per 1,000 page views, which is lower than eCPM when a page carries several ads with unfilled slots.
How many page views do I need to earn $1,000 a month?
Divide $1,000 by your page RPM and multiply by 1,000. At a $10 RPM that is 100,000 page views a month; at $3 it is about 333,000. Switch the tool to "CPM", enter your revenue and views, and it shows your current RPM.
