How it's calculated

Long-distance movers price by weight and distance: this estimate uses about 35 cents a pound to load and unload plus 0.06 cents per pound per mile to carry it, so a two-bedroom home (5,500 lb) going 500 miles comes to roughly $3,600, with packing adding about 25 cents a pound. A rental truck is priced by the mile plus fuel at about 8 miles per gallon, plus a couple of hundred dollars of boxes and blankets. Local moves under about 100 miles are usually billed hourly instead; the full-service figure still gives the right order of magnitude.

Movers ≈ Weight × 0.35 + Weight × Miles × 0.0006 (+ Weight × 0.25 for packing) DIY ≈ Miles × 1.2 + Miles ÷ 8 × 4 + 250
How much does it cost to move a 2-bedroom apartment?

Locally with movers, about $800–1,500 for a crew of three at $120–180 an hour for 5–8 hours. Across 500 miles, $3,000–5,000 full service or around $1,000 with a rental truck and your own labour. Across the country, $5,000–9,000 with movers.

How do I avoid moving scams?

Get at least three estimates based on an in-home or video survey, never a phone guess. Choose a binding or not-to-exceed estimate, check the company's USDOT number on the FMCSA site, and be wary of large deposits or a quote far below the others. Movers who hold goods hostage for extra fees are the classic complaint.

Is it cheaper to move myself?

Almost always in cash, by half or more, and almost never in time and effort. The middle options are a moving container, which costs about 40–60% of full service and lets you pack at your pace, or hiring labour by the hour at each end and driving the truck yourself.
