How it's calculated

A walking stride is about 41% of height, so a 5 ft 9 person covers roughly 28.5 inches a step. Steps times stride in inches, divided by 12 and then by 5,280, gives miles; 10,000 steps is about 4.5 miles for that height. Calories use the rule that walking burns about 0.53 calories per mile for each pound of body weight. Measure your own stride, ten steps divided by ten, and the distance tightens up.

Stride (in) = Height (in) × 0.413 Miles = Steps × Stride ÷ 12 ÷ 5280 Calories ≈ Miles × Weight (lb) × 0.53
How many miles is 10,000 steps?

About 4 to 5 miles depending on height and pace: roughly 4.2 miles for someone 5 ft 4, 4.5 at 5 ft 9 and 4.8 at 6 ft 1. Running strides are longer, so 10,000 running steps can be 6 miles or more.

How do I measure my stride?

Walk ten normal steps on a flat surface from a marked start, measure the distance in inches, and divide by ten. Enter it by adjusting height until the stride result matches, or just divide your steps by 63,360 over your stride for miles.

Are 10,000 steps a day necessary?

The number started as a pedometer marketing slogan in 1960s Japan. Research since finds health benefits rising to about 7,000–8,000 steps a day for most adults, with more still helping but with smaller returns. Any increase from where you are counts.
