How it's calculated
Wall area is the room perimeter times the wall height, less about 20 square feet per door and 15 per window. That area is divided by the usable coverage of one roll, not the printed size: a standard American single roll is 56 square feet, but trimming at the ceiling and floor and matching the pattern leaves about 25 usable, and less for a large repeat. Most paper is sold in double rolls, so the tool shows both.
What is the difference between a single and a double roll?
The same width, twice the length. A US single roll is about 56 sq ft, a double roll 112. Shops price and stock most paper as double rolls even when the label quotes single-roll coverage. European rolls are smaller, about 57 sq ft each, sold singly.
How does the pattern repeat affect how much I need?
Every strip must start at the same point in the pattern, so part of each strip is cut off. A random match wastes little; a 24 in repeat can waste a fifth of the roll. Lower the usable square feet per roll when the repeat is large.
Should I subtract doors and windows?
Yes, but modestly. The tool takes off 20 sq ft per door and 15 per window, which is a little less than their true size, because the strips around them still need the full length and are often where the waste goes.
