How it's calculated
The split follows what US couples typically spend by category: the reception venue with food and drink takes close to half, photography and video about an eighth, and music, flowers and attire about 8% each, with the rest in smaller lines and a 5% buffer for tips, overages and the things nobody budgets for. Multiply your total by each share for a starting figure per line, then move money between lines to match what matters to you. Cost per guest is the total divided by the headcount, and it is the lever: every guest you add costs roughly that much.
What does the average wedding cost?
Around $33,000 in the US in recent surveys, with a wide range: under $10,000 for small or backyard weddings and well over $50,000 in big cities. Cost per guest averages about $280, which is why cutting the guest list is the fastest way to cut the budget.
Where can I save the most?
The reception line. An off-season or weekday date, a lunch or brunch instead of dinner, beer and wine instead of a full bar, and a venue that includes catering, tables and chairs all cut it. Trimming the guest list cuts that line and several others at once.
Do I need a 5% buffer?
Yes. Gratuities for vendors, alteration fees, overtime, postage, a sudden tent rental: most weddings run 10% over the plan without a buffer. If you reach the day without touching it, it becomes honeymoon money.
