How it's calculated

Floor area is length times width. Add a waste allowance for cuts, breakage and a few spares for future repairs: 10% for plank flooring and straight-set tile, 15% for diagonal or herringbone layouts and large-format tile. Divide by the coverage printed on the box and round up. For an L-shaped room, split it into rectangles and add the areas.

To buy = L × W × (1 + Waste ÷ 100) Boxes = To buy ÷ Coverage per box, rounded up
How much extra flooring should I buy?

10% is the usual allowance; go to 15% for diagonal, herringbone or patterned layouts, rooms with many corners, or natural stone, where breakage is higher. Keep one spare box for repairs.

Does the calculator handle closets and alcoves?

Measure each as its own rectangle and add the areas, then run the total here with the width set to 1 and the length set to that total square footage.

Should I count the area under cabinets and appliances?

Floating floors and tile usually stop at the cabinet toe-kick, so leave those out. Include the space under fridges and dishwashers so they can be pulled out later.
