How it's calculated
The sale price is the original price times (1 minus the discount). A second discount applies to the already reduced price, not the original, so “25% off plus an extra 20% off” is 40% off in total, not 45%. The total discount shown is the real combined percentage.
Why is 25% off plus 20% off not 45% off?
The second discount is taken from the sale price, which is already smaller. $80 at 25% off is $60; 20% off $60 is $48, which is 40% off the original $80.
Is sales tax charged on the sale price or the original price?
On the sale price in nearly every state, after store discounts. Manufacturer coupons are treated differently in some states, so check your receipt.
How do I work out the discount percent from two prices?
Divide the saving by the original price and multiply by 100. Our percentage calculator does this in the "% change" mode.
