How it's calculated
A percent is a number out of 100. To take a percent of a number, multiply by the percent and divide by 100. To find what percent one number is of another, divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. Percent change compares the difference to the starting value, so going from 100 to 125 is +25% but going from 125 to 100 is −20%.
What is the difference between percent change and percentage points?
Percent change is relative to the starting value: 10% to 15% is a 50% increase. Percentage points are the plain difference: 10% to 15% is 5 points.
How do I reverse a percentage increase?
Divide by 1 plus the rate. A price that is $120 after a 20% increase was $120 ÷ 1.20 = $100, not $120 − 20% = $96.
Why is the percent change blank or 0 when I start from 0?
Change from zero is undefined, since any increase from nothing is infinitely large. Use the "% of a number" mode instead.
