How it's calculated
A test score is points earned divided by points possible, times 100. The final-exam question works backwards from the weighted average: the grade you want equals your current grade times its share of the course plus the final times its share, so the final you need is the target minus the current grade’s contribution, divided by the final’s weight. With an 85 going in, a 30% final and a 90 target, you need (90 − 85 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 101.7, which is to say a 90 is just out of reach.
What grade do I need on my final to pass?
Switch to "What I need on the final", enter your current average, the passing mark (often 60 or 70) and the final's weight from the syllabus. If the result is under 0 you have already passed; if it is over 100 you cannot pass on the final alone and should talk to the instructor about extra credit or options.
What is the letter grade scale?
The common US scale is 90–100 A, 80–89 B, 70–79 C, 60–69 D, below 60 F, with plus and minus bands of about three points. Many schools and all universities set their own; the syllabus wins. UK degree classes and other systems use different cut-offs entirely.
How do I find my current grade if my assignments have different weights?
Multiply each category average by its weight and add them up, then divide by the total weight of the categories completed so far. If homework (20%) averages 95, quizzes (20%) 80 and midterms (30%) 85, the current grade is (19 + 16 + 25.5) ÷ 0.7 = 86.4. The GPA calculator on this site handles whole courses the same way.
